Without the security of a home, stray dogs are more vulnerable to illness, injury, and mistreatment. While a few manage to get by, many face daily hardship just to survive.
One dog in Detroit, Michigan, named Nikki, faced an even more heartbreaking situation—she was grieving the loss of her owner while living as a stray.

According to South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, Nikki was abandoned on the streets with only her cherished stuffed toy after her owner died. Though a neighbor had been giving her food, no one stepped up to provide her with shelter.
Thankfully, rescuers were contacted. Nikki was safely captured and brought to Almost Home Animal Rescue. An update from the recovery group revealed that Nikki tested positive for heartworms and required intensive medical treatment and evaluations, which come with high costs and effort.
In addition to her physical health issues, Nikki was emotionally scarred from the trauma of abandonment and grief. Her stuffed animal became her source of comfort during the ordeal. Channel 4 News reported that Nikki is now in a foster home and recovering. Her foster family intends to adopt her, giving her a hopeful future and the love she deserves.
