A terrible loss for William and Harry: We mournfully announce the passing of close family member

Lord Robert Fellowes, a trusted figure of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana, has died at the age of 82.

Married to Lady Jane Spencer—Diana’s sister—he was the uncle of Princes William and Harry. The couple had three children: Laura, Eleanor, and Alexander.

Fellowes served as the Queen’s private secretary during the turbulent 1990s, a period marked by royal divorces and the devastating 1992 Windsor Castle fire, which he helped manage.

After Princess Diana’s tragic death in a 1997 car crash in Paris, Fellowes played a key role in the Royal Family’s response. He later denied conspiracy claims made by Dodi Fayed’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, who accused him of involvement in the couple’s deaths.

Remembered as wise, principled, and kind, he was deeply respected within the Royal Family. His father, Sir William “Billy” Fellowes, was the land agent at Sandringham for 30 years, where Robert was also born. Queen Elizabeth once said, “Robert is the only one of my private secretaries I have held in my arms.”
