A sick calf sleeps alone on the ground until a dog arrives to help!
Animals are incredibly intelligent, compassionate, and comforting! ❤️🐶🐮 They have such a pure ability to love—especially dogs, who seem to have an innate gift for it. Just a little love from them can change everything. ❤️
In 2020, The Gentle Barn—founded by Ellie Laks and Jay Weiner—rescued a calf from a slaughterhouse after he became orphaned. His mother had passed away, and he was only a week old. They named him John Lewis Thunderheart, honoring both his fighting spirit and his gentle soul.
When Lewis first arrived, he was in critical condition with severe pneumonia. His breathing was labored, he had a persistent cough, and his fever was dangerously high. Due to the stressful conditions he was born into, he hadn’t received enough colostrum to strengthen his immune system. Fighting pneumonia at such a young age, he needed intensive care—so they brought him into their air-conditioned home for round-the-clock attention.
That’s where Sky came in.
Sky, a dog they had adopted from a previous owner who couldn’t manage his energy, turned out to be a natural therapy dog. He brings joy, eases anger, and soothes anxiety. He became Lewis’ constant companion—lying beside him, calming him, and offering the love and comfort he needed to heal.
Thanks to that love, Lewis began to recover.
Once Lewis was strong enough to go outside, it became clear just how close he and Sky had become. Though one is now over 1,000 pounds and the other a nimble dog, they still share a beautiful bond—playing gently, showing affection, and simply being together.
Ellie shared, “Lewis will lie down, and Sky will cuddle up next to him, licking him and resting by his side. To us, they’re a dog and a cow—but to each other, they’re simply friends. Family. Love.”
Border Collies like Sky are naturally loving and gentle—it’s amazing what calm, kind animals can teach us about compassion.
Prayers for continued healing for sweet Lewis. 💓🙏
Animals often show more kindness and care than many people do. This story is a reminder of just how beautiful and wise they truly are. ❤️🐾
